When we think about the origins of the oil market, collective memory often turns to the wooden derricks of 18th-century Pennsylvania or the giant wells of the Middle East in the 20th century. There is, however, an illusion in this narrative. Oil was not born during the Industrial Revolution, nor was it an invention of modernity. It is the protagonist in a relationship spanning more than five thousand years between humanity and the depths of the Earth—a saga connecting the builders of Mesopotamia to the man who created the greatest corporate empire in history: John D. Rockefeller.

To understand the rise of the Standard Oil empire, we must look back. The history of oil is the story of how civilization learned to support its structures, illuminate the darkness, and ultimately feed the voracious appetite of modern capitalism.

Long before the first mechanical drill pierced the Earth’s crust, oil was already part of everyday life in the earliest great civilizations. Across the plains of ancient Mesopotamia, “black gold” naturally seeped to the surface through fractures in the ground. Under the intense Middle Eastern sun, the volatile components of the liquid evaporated, leaving behind a thick, viscous, and highly waterproof substance: bitumen.

For the peoples who were developing writing and agriculture, bitumen was not a fuel but an essential construction material. Lacking hard stone and high-quality timber, the Sumerians and Babylonians built empires with fired clay bricks. To ensure that their structures could withstand the flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, they mixed bitumen with sand and straw, creating waterproof mortar.

Fences, handmade reed boats, and imposing ziggurats were sealed with this black substance. Even Egyptian mummification and ancient empirical medicine used the product to preserve bodies and treat wounds.

However, antiquity was constrained by a physical limitation: humanity was merely a surface collector. For almost four millennia, people used only the oil that the Earth chose to expel naturally. It would take an unprecedented energy crisis in the Western world for “rock oil” to stop being merely an adhesive and become a source of light.

In the first half of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution redefined the pace of human life. Cities expanded, factories extended their shifts into the night, and society demanded illumination. The world, however, faced a bottleneck: it lacked a clean and inexpensive fuel.

Wax candles were an aristocratic luxury; animal tallow produced foul-smelling smoke; and coal gas required expensive pipelines that were inaccessible to ordinary homes. High-quality urban lighting depended on the ocean, specifically on whale blubber and the spermaceti extracted from the heads of sperm whales.

Unrestrained hunting, however, depleted whale populations. Whaling voyages began to last as long as four years, and the price of a gallon of oil soared, making public and domestic lighting prohibitively expensive. The world was experiencing its first major energy crisis. Progress risked coming to a halt in the dark unless a new source of energy could be discovered.

The answer began to emerge from an operational problem in Pennsylvania’s saltwater wells. During the 1840s, wells belonging to the family of businessman Samuel Kier were frequently contaminated by a black, viscous liquid.

After noticing that Native Americans used the product on their skin, Kier had the idea of bottling the pollutant. “Kier’s Petroleum, or Rock Oil” was born—a “medicinal elixir” sold by traveling vendors to treat burns and joint pain.

Because production from the wells exceeded demand from pharmacies, Kier conducted a crucial experiment around 1850: he built a small, homemade cast-iron still. By heating crude oil, he obtained a clear, yellowish liquid known as Carbon Oil, which burned in lamps while producing little smoke. Kier became the first person to refine and commercially sell petroleum for lighting.

The decisive turning point came when New York lawyer George Bissell saw one of the promotional pamphlets for Kier’s medicine. The leaflet featured an illustration of the wooden derricks used to extract saltwater. Bissell had an insight: if the oil rose with the saltwater, it should not be collected from pools on the surface but drilled directly from its underground source.

To convince investors, Bissell sent oil samples to chemist Benjamin Silliman Jr. at Yale University. In 1855, Silliman’s scientific report confirmed what the world had been waiting for: distilled petroleum produced a bright-burning, safe kerosene that was incomparably cheaper than whale oil, as well as valuable lubricants for industry.

With this scientific validation, the Seneca Oil Company sent former railroad conductor Edwin L. Drake to the small town of Titusville, Pennsylvania.

Faced with marshy ground that caused manually dug holes to collapse, Drake and blacksmith William Smith adapted the technique used for salt wells: they drove a heavy iron pipe into the ground until it reached bedrock, operating the mechanical drill inside it.

On August 27, 1859, at a depth of 21 meters, oil finally rose through the pipe. The success of Drake’s well proved that the Earth contained oceans of energy ready to be extracted. The result was a “black gold” rush that transformed Pennsylvania into a jungle of wooden derricks and financial speculation.

Drake’s discovery, however, gave rise to a chaotic market. Uncontrolled drilling caused overproduction and extreme volatility: the price of a barrel could collapse from $20 to $0.10 within a matter of weeks. Wells caught fire, producers went bankrupt, and millions of gallons were wasted.

It was into this anarchic environment that a young Cleveland accountant named John D. Rockefeller entered.

With a cold and strategic vision, Rockefeller recognized what everyone else had overlooked: drilling the ground was a risky gamble, but refining and transportation were mathematical necessities. Regardless of who extracted the oil, every barrel had to be refined into clean kerosene and delivered to consumers.

In 1870, he founded the Standard Oil Company. The company did not seek fortune through drilling; it sought absolute control over the industrial bottleneck. Rockefeller imposed relentless efficiency:

• Zero waste: Chemists were hired to transform refining by-products into petroleum jelly, grease, paraffin wax, and asphalt. It is said that 40 drops of solder were used to seal a gallon container of kerosene. Rockefeller asked his workers to try 39 drops, and it worked, saving millions of dollars.

• Standardization: The brand guaranteed safe kerosene that would not explode in household lamps.

• Freight dominance: As the railroads’ largest customer, Rockefeller demanded secret transportation discounts, known as rebates, as well as commissions on the freight fees charged to his competitors, suffocating rival refineries.

In less than two decades, Standard Oil came to control approximately 90% of oil refining and transportation in the United States, transforming Rockefeller into the richest man in the world. His fortune in tangible assets was estimated at approximately 2% of U.S. GDP, making him the architect of the first major modern corporate monopoly.

In conclusion, when the points are connected across time, it becomes clear that the rise of John D. Rockefeller was not an isolated event but the culmination of a five-thousand-year evolutionary process.

The journey that began with the Sumerians sealing boats with bitumen and continued through the whalers who risked their lives on the oceans found its ultimate expression in “rock oil.” Samuel Kier’s medicine bottle, George Bissell’s vision, and Edwin Drake’s drill set the stage for Rockefeller to organize the chaos and transform oil into the lifeblood of the financial and industrial system.

From the bitumen of Babylon to the pipelines of Standard Oil, the history of petroleum is the history of civilization itself learning to harness the power of the Earth to build the modern world. After all, a barrel of oil contains 159 liters—and, as with almost every inheritance, a world of problems!
