Oil Has Stopped Trading the War – It’s Trading the Barrels Now | Investing.com

fell this morning after the United States carried out one of the heaviest waves of strikes on Iran since this conflict began, dozens of Revolutionary Guard targets were hit, Tehran’s own state media reported explosions across half a dozen cities, three Guards members were confirmed killed, and the Guards themselves vowed to punish the aggressor before the day is out. slipped back under 90 dollars. On any normal week of this war, that combination of facts would have sent the front month sharply higher, not lower. It did not, and the reason why is more useful than the headline itself.

The physical market has spent the past week quietly answering the question the geopolitical one keeps failing to. On Wednesday, the US Energy Secretary put a specific number on the table that barely made it past the wires: roughly 13 million barrels a day are still leaving the Gulf region, with the US military now actively escorting tankers through the strait itself, and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, contrary to the running commentary about it sitting at a four-decade low, is according to him still a long way from any operational minimum. A Qatari LNG carrier crossed the Iran-designated route through Hormuz this week with Tehran’s own explicit permission, a single tanker that matters less for its cargo than for what it confirms: there is still a functioning, negotiated channel keeping the strait open even while missiles are flying twenty miles away from it. That is the fact the market has been trading since Wednesday, not the strike count.

It is not trading a calm picture, either. The conflict’s target list widened again overnight in ways worth separating from the noise. A Greek-owned, Bermuda-flagged LNG tanker was struck by a drone while alongside at Egypt’s Damietta port, the first attack of this war to land inside Egyptian territory rather than the Gulf or Red Sea. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium halted loadings again after a tanker was attacked at its mooring, a repeat of the disruption that first rattled Kazakh export flows earlier this month. An Iranian strike hit a building belonging to a Chinese company in northern Kuwait, killing one worker, a detail that pulled Beijing directly into the casualty count of a war it has so far tried to stay rhetorically adjacent to. None of that is priced as a reason to panic buy. It is priced as confirmation that the war is spreading sideways across the region’s infrastructure map while the one corridor everyone actually needs, the strait itself, keeps functioning under a mix of military escort and tacit permission. Sideways is not the same as closed, and crude has been treating that distinction correctly all week even when the newsflow argued otherwise.

The demand side of this story deserves equal weight, because it is the part most commentary skipped entirely this week. Federal Reserve officials, in minutes released alongside Wednesday’s decision to hold rates, said plainly they saw little evidence that higher oil prices were yet showing up in the cost of other goods and services, and explicitly cautioned against reading a temporary energy spike as the start of a lasting inflation problem, while flagging the obvious catch: the longer prices stay elevated, the more that judgement gets tested. Japan did not wait for the test. Tokyo cut its own fiscal 2026 growth forecast to 0.9 percent from 1.3 percent, citing rising oil prices by name as the reason, the first concrete downgrade of a major economy’s own growth outlook directly attributable to this shock rather than to the war itself. That is the more durable risk sitting underneath this week’s price action: not whether Hormuz stays open, which the physical data increasingly suggests it will, but how many more growth forecasts get quietly trimmed the way Japan’s just was if 85-dollar crude becomes 95-dollar crude and stays there through the autumn.

Two supply responses are now sitting on the table that matter more for where this settles than tomorrow’s strike count. The first is diplomatic rather than military: Washington’s own sanctions on Iran-linked tankers this week were framed explicitly around what the Treasury called Hormuz monetisation, a policy aimed less at stopping the war than at stopping anyone from profiting off disrupting the strait specifically, a narrower and more surgical goal than a blanket oil embargo would be. The second is a genuine new supply lever rather than a policy statement: Britain’s prime minister has reportedly told Washington he is prepared to open the North Sea back up, the first concrete offer from a producing nation to add barrels into a market that has otherwise been entirely reactive to the Gulf all month. Neither of those replaces Gulf supply on any near-term timeline. Both are signals that the policy response to this shock is starting to move past crisis management and into something closer to a coordinated attempt to cap it.

None of this argues the risk has passed. Explosions were still being reported in southern Iran as this went to print, and a war that has already widened from Hormuz to the Red Sea to the Caspian to, now, Egypt and Kuwait has not shown much discipline about staying contained to any one theatre for long. But the specific claim worth testing against your own book is this: the market that spent the spring and early summer pricing every single headline out of this conflict has, in the last week, started pricing the barrels instead, and those two things are no longer moving together. Watch the actual flow data out of the strait and the CPC terminal before the next strike headline, not after it. That is where this is actually going to be decided.
